Tom Thumb’s 2020 Fall Outlook – May 10, 2020

Currently, we are expecting to open for the 2020 Fall Semester. We don’t know the designate date as yet. The opening of Tom Thumb will depend on the Lakeland School Districts’ official decision to begin the fall semester and any New York State restrictions.

We are now accepting enrollment for the 2020 Fall Semester. You may register for ThumBelina, Tom Thumb Junior or Senior Programs, and Stay & Play Safely – before and after school care for Lakeland elementary students. Please download and print the registration forms. If you don’t have a printer, you can pick up a registration form at the Tom Thumb School entrance.

At Tom Thumb Preschool, there is never a registration fee or any hidden charges. The tuition price you pay is published on our website with no extra costs.

Please postal mail your completed registration form to us with an enclosed check for a $100 deposit with each registration form for ThumBelina or Tom Thumb or a $50 deposit for each Stay and Play registration form. We recommend you send your registration forms as early as possible to secure your child’s place in a class. After our classes are filled, your choice is to be wait-listed or have your deposit refunded.

If Tom Thumb doesn’t open in the 2020 fall timeframe, your deposit will be promptly refunded.

On behalf of the entire Tom Thumb staff, we miss our students and will only open our school if it’s safe for our kids.

I hope to see you this fall!

2020 Summer Camp is Suspended – May 10, 2020

Tom Thumb’s Summer Camp, “Catch Us If You Can,“ for ages 31/2 to 10 years olds will NOT OPEN this summer. Due to new reports of “pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome” that has attacked very young children that complicates this Pandemic, I have decided to be extra careful in these historical unpredictables times and put the safety of our children first.

All refunds checks for camp have been sent. I have received many checks that have NOT been deposited and have been destroyed. Please check your bank statement and verify it.

To ALL OUR CAMPERS: Summer camp is a fun-time that we all look forward to during the school year. We will miss you at the Tom Thumb Campus this summer more than I can say. We HOPE to see you next summer, and we will have the HEALTHIEST, SAFEST, and HAPPIEST summer ever in “2020NE!” We will all PLAY TOGETHER AGAIN!

Kids- Don’t forget to Wash Your Hands and Use Plenty of Soap.

A HEADS UP TO PARENTS – April 23, 2020

  1. I have a T-shirt, a Tom Thumb Mini Olympic cup, and a medal for all my Juniors and 1 Senior class that could not have their event at Dynamic Gymnastics. All the children have been practicing since October with Mrs. Ruback and Mrs. Rambala. They DESERVE everything I can give them.
  2. Seniors will not have their Spring Show and Graduation Ceremony this school year. However, they have been practicing their songs, dance, and drumming since November. I will be introducing all of the songs on my website (video and words. 3 new songs sung by Miss Claudia & Miss Maria will be introduced. I will make these songs part of next year’s repertoire. The new songs are:
    • “We Will Never Give Up” music by Beethoven
    • “Keep Your Hands From Your Face”
    • “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” music by the Police

Parents, please Sing-a-Long when you can.

  3. Pronto Printer is helping me create a special Graduation Certificate for seniors and their medals (I love medals). All students, Tom Thumb and ThumBelina, will receive a T-shirt in 2020. I hope we can create a shirt that can capture these unusual times our children are living through at such a young age. No young preschoolers have ever had this kind of experience. I hope some parents can send me pictures of children wearing masks. Let them wave, jump up & down or whatever they would like to do. I want to have children singing, dancing, and drumming. Please practice! Who knows maybe someday children will return to Tom Thumb for one great big sing-a-long in late fall. I CAN DREAM – CAN’T I?
  4. The last item is how to get the Mini Olympic medal, cup, certificates, T-shirts, change of clothes and medical supplies to parents. These items will be packed up and parents can pick them up in a safe manner. So in Tom Thumb’s gym, we will have all items packaged together and ready to go. They will be alphabetized by CHILD’s LAST NAME. The “I Want to Be” Medals will be on a separate table. Parents will come in one door and go out the other. The flow of people will be organized. I will put a notice on our website by May 25th and a schedule of TIMES AND DAYS each class may come to our gym. There will be make-up dates for those who need it.

In the meantime, check out our website. The last day for Home Activities will be Friday, May 8th.

Stay Strong and BELIEVE WE CAN WIN

April 10 Note to Overworked Parents

Dear Parent,
Another ambitious idea from me. Again, you don’t need any pressure.
Hopefully, this suggestion can help your children stay connected to their classmates.

Have your child call one classmate each day, possibly using Facetime or Skype or a Video Conferencing Service for a more meaningful shared experience. Since there is no Show and Tell Time, this may be an excellent substitute to respond to an unscripted exchange of ideas.

Parents may help and guide children:

  • Encourage children to say hello to each other
  • Prompt children to tell each other their names
  • Ask children to talk about siblings or family.
  • Have the children talk about what they do for fun?

I am sure you may have some ideas and probably a better one for a discussion. Again, Absolutely No Pressure – please use as you see fit. Let us know if this goes well or not.
Our teachers are also working on some ways to connect with their classes. I will keep you informed.

Stay safe.

Nancy Brophy

April 6 Note to Tom Thumb Parents

Dear Parents.

It has come to my attention some of our families don’t have printers. Pronto Printers has made copies of our worksheets. Now, all children can participate without printers by picking up a packet at the Dynamic Gymnastics lobby door. The lobby is open 24 hours a day.

These packets include last week’s and current week’s worksheets stapled together. We made these worksheets to stimulate our students by tracing, matching, coloring, and thinking. They can proceed at their own pace with no pressure. Please use our home activities as you see fit.

I am planning a Spring Show and Graduation Program using the Internet. Zoom, a Video Conference Service, has been successfully used by schools to communicate with students and for distance learning. Since this is all new to our staff, we are working out the program and the technicalities. Any parents who can help us with an interactive online program with Zoom, please call me at (914) 282-6602.

Our Online Spring Show and Graduation Program will include the following songs:

  1. Tom Thumb & Kids Come
  2. Don’t Say Nothing Bad About My Vowels
  3. Remember Your Name & Address
  4. I Like Being Me
  5. School Rules
  6. Ode to Joy (maybe)
  7. Friends Forever (definitely)

Yes, Each graduating senior will receive their Tom Thumb Diploma and Tom Thumb Medal. To all graduating seniors, please practice the songs for this graduation. We will ensure the song lyrics and music are available on our website.

To all Tom Thumb Students, please sing the songs and do each worksheet activity in your home for fun for as many times you want and when you want. The purpose of our home activities is to play and have fun.

My important message to parents and students is Don’t Be Alone. Stay physically distanced by at least 6 feet, but socially connected. Always stay connected to the ones you love by phone calls, Facetime, Skype, video conferencing, emails, or texting. Say hello to grandma & grandpa, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends, as often as you can!

Listen to the “Wash Your Hands song in Home Activity #2 as often as you want. I will get the lyrics of the song posted on our website soon. Please wash your hands as often as you can while singing.

Parents, you all deserve a standing ovation and medal for your efforts in getting through this unsettling and confusing time. Stay safe and socially connected.

I miss you all,

Mrs. Brophy
